Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • Your paper is within the scope of the journal. Please read both our aims and scope, and previous papers, and carefully consider whether your paper is a good fit. We desk-reject a very high proportion of submissions because they lie outside our scope, including all papers where the main focus is analysis of published text and /or where findings fail to make a contribution to understanding that extends beyond the specific context in which data were collected.
  • You have carefully read and followed the author guidelines.
  • You are submitting both an anonymised version of your paper, and a title page that gives authors' names and affiliation (see author guidelines for more details).
  • You paper has not previously been published and is not currently being considered for publication elsewhere.
  • You have read and adhered to our policies on anonymisation (avoid "Author, date").
  • You have read and adhered to our policies on open science. In particular, your paper includes information about how readers can access raw data.
  • Figures and tables are included at the appropriate place in the article, and are formatted according to APA guidelines. You have included a separate zip file containing all figures in a high-resolution graphic format (e.g. tiff or eps).
  • The reference list is complete and formatted in the most recent version of the APA style. DOIs, in web-address format, are provided for all cited papers (unless unavailable).

Author Guidelines

Before proceeding, please first check the journal description and our aims and scope to determine whether your paper is within our remit.

If your paper meets our aims then we invite you to proceed with a submission. This must include the following, as separate files...

  • A title page, giving the title of your paper, names, professional affiliations, and email addresses for all authors, an abstract (max. 200 words), keywords (max. 5), a suggested running head, and full mailing address for the corresponding author and other authors.
  • The submitted article, with title and abstract, but without author details and with all author identification removed. Articles will typically be not more than 8000 words in length. When preparing your paper please consult our separate Guidance for Authors PDF
  • A zip file containing print-quality versions of all figures, if any.
  • A covering letter to the editor (optional).

Papers should be submitted through the online system, using the links at the top of this page. Papers must be submitted as PDF (.pdf) or MS Word (.doc, .docx, .rtf) files. If necessary, please contact [email protected] for support.

Submissions by anyone other than one of the authors will not be accepted. The submitting author takes responsibility for the paper during submission and peer review.

If you are not yet registered as a user of the journal, you need to register first as a new user. Submit your article electronically via the submission wizard. Follow the steps to create a submission. Consult the OJS guide on authoring for a more in-depth explanation.

After submission, your article will be checked by the editors and you will receive an email that we received your paper.

Anonymising

When citing your own papers please give the full reference, including your names, but anonymise by referring to yourself in the third person. This allows reviewers to assess the evidence presented in your self-citations. Please avoid using Author (date) except in rare cases where giving your name would, necessarily, reveal your identity to reviewers.

Open Science

We expect authors to follow open science principles including making data publicly available when papers are accepted for publication. This means placing your raw, anonymised data and, ideally, code for data analysis and other research materials in a public repository. We recommend Open Science Foundation but there are several alternatives. Your paper should then provide a link to these data. We will not accept papers that just say "data are available from authors on reasonable request" or similar.

Data must be made available if your paper is accepted, and your action editor will need to be able to access it before they send you paper to be prepared for publication. Your submission to the journal must, however, signal your intent to make your data public.

We recognise that there are a small number of exceptions to this where anonymisation is impossible - qualitative analysis of inteview transcripts, for example. Please do discuss these with your action editor. We are, however, unlikely to accept papers where data are poptentially publishable (i.e. they can be anonymised) but the authors lack permission to do so.

Terms of Submission

Papers must be submitted on the understanding that they have not been published elsewhere (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture, review, or thesis) and are not currently under consideration by another journal published by any other publisher. In making a submission to Journal of Writing Research you agree to us submitting your anonymised paper to plagiarism-checking software.

The submitting author is responsible for ensuring that the article's publication is an original publication that has been approved by all the other coauthors. It is also the author’s responsibility to ensure that the articles emanating from a particular institution are submitted with that institution’s approval.

Where papers report reanalysis of data that have been reported, in part of in full, in previous publications, details should be given both in the body of the paper and a covering letter to the editor.

Further correspondence and proofs will be sent to the author(s) before publication unless otherwise indicated. All papers are submitted under the condition that authors accept that their paper might be edited for readability. All inquiries concerning the publication of accepted papers should be addressed to: [email protected].

Linguistic Editing

The journal’s language of publication is English. Published articles need to meet high academic writing standards. However, we recognise that the majority of authors will not have English as their first language. You should do everything you can to ensure that you paper communicates clearly in good English prior to submission. Papers that do not meet this standard will not be sent out for review. For papers that are accepted for publication members of the JoWR community will, if necessary, provide English language editing.

Consent

Upon publication, you will be asked to complete a consent form, giving us the permission to publish your article open access under Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 4.0 Unported license.
